The club toured to Portugal for the first time in 1966 and by all accounts the tour was a tremendous success.
Three games where played and the Penguin side was captained by Joe Amstrong with Tony Mason as Manager/Player and Alan Wright as the Tour Administration Manager.
The game against Tecnico was gloriously reported in the Portuguese press and the report can be viewed here.
Match 1 - Penguins 60 - 3 Agronomia
Match 2 - Penguins 6 - 9 Tecnico
Match 3 - Penguins beat CDUL
Matches 1 and 2 where played at the University Stadium in Lisbon.
The second game was played against my own club - Tecnico - and to the surprise of everybody we won by 9-6. I was on the winning side. I remember that my partner as centre three quarter (Antonio Pina Cabral), a small guy, put in, at the very beginning of the game, a tremendous tackle on one of the Penguins big locks. This tackle galvanised the Tecnico team and we put a very brave display tackling everybody who was moving.
Thank you to Pedro Ribeiro for his recollections.
